PR Manager (Part-Time, Hybrid)

Location: Strong preference for South Carolina–based candidates; Hybrid schedule with up to 2 days/week in the Columbia office.

Role Overview

Compass Global Communications is seeking an experienced PR Manager to provide strategic, high-quality communications support in a fast-paced environment across diverse industries. The ideal candidate is a proactive communicator with strong writing skills, excellent news judgment, and deep familiarity with media relations at both the state and national levels.

This role requires someone who can think strategically, act tactically, and collaborate closely with the CEO and senior team. The PR Manager will help shape narratives, manage accounts, develop media opportunities, and elevate client visibility across local, national, and international markets.

Candidates with experience on Capitol Hill, major communications markets (e.g., Washington, DC; New York; Atlanta), or SC state politics are highly encouraged to apply.

This position may manage one to two junior staff as client needs grow.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Communications & Media Relations

  • Develop and execute PR strategies, messaging, and media campaigns aligned with client goals.

  • Maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, broadcasters, digital reporters, influencers, and trade-sector media.

  • Pitch stories proactively to secure national, state, and local earned media.

  • Monitor and interpret news cycles, trends, and geopolitical developments relevant to client work.

  • Represent the company or clients during virtual conferences, webinars, and other media-facing events.

  • Maintain accurate media lists, editorial calendars, and outreach trackers.

Content Creation & Thought Leadership

  • Draft and edit high-quality communications materials, including:

    • Press releases

    • Media pitches

    • Talking points

    • Newsletters

    • Proposals

    • Case studies

    • White papers

    • Social media content

  • Assist with the development of pitch decks and presentations for business development.

  • Support thought leadership efforts across traditional and digital platforms.

Research & Client Support

  • Conduct research across global and domestic policy, international trade, agriculture, corporate finance, geopolitics, and related fields to inform client strategy.

  • Prepare briefings, executive summaries, and reports for clients and senior leadership.

  • Track milestones, deliverables, and deadlines for client projects.

Client & Relationship Management

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for select accounts, ensuring high-quality communication and deliverables.

  • Assist with client onboarding, strategic planning, meeting prep, and follow-up.

  • Coordinate with finance to track expenses and maintain accurate records.

  • Support thoughtful, personalized client engagement efforts (holidays, milestones, special occasions).

  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all internal and client matters.

  • Uphold the highest professional standards in writing, communication, and conduct.

  • Demonstrate adaptability and ease working in a fun, fast-paced, fluid environment with shifting priorities.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 5 years in public relations, communications, public affairs, or media relations.

  • Strong writing, editing, and message development skills.

  • Experience engaging with media at local, state, and national levels; experience with international media is a plus.

  • Comfort working with journalists and responding to media inquiries under deadline.

  • Ability to work with trade associations, business groups, and private-sector clients.

  • Familiarity with Capitol Hill, SC politics, and/or major communications markets (DC, NY, Atlanta).

  • Experience with social media strategy and content creation.

  • Interest in geopolitics, global affairs, and emerging world events.

  • Technical proficiency in:

    • Microsoft Word

    • Adobe tools

    • PRNewswire / GlobeNewswire or similar distribution platforms

  • Ability to manage one or two junior team members as client needs evolve.

  • Willingness to travel up to 5%, with potential for increased travel opportunities.
